B.C. To Host 2014 Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League Women’s National Championship April 25-27

(Ottawa, Ont.) Wheelchair Basketball Canada is pleased to announce that the BC Wheelchair Basketball Society (BCWBS) will host the 2014 Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League (CWBL) Women’s National Championship April 25-27, 2014 at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

“We are very excited for B.C. to host the 2014 Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League Women’s Finals, which promises to be the one of the best women’s tournaments ever,” said Wheelchair Basketball Canada Executive Director Wendy Gittens. “All of the top club teams in the country will be assembled to showcase the women’s game. It’s a great opportunity for people to catch a glimpse at some of the top female athletes in the country and experience the ongoing growth of the sport as excitement builds toward the 2014 Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship, which will be the largest women’s wheelchair basketball event in history.”

The tournament will feature elite female players from across Canada, including past, present, and future members of Team Canada who will be competing for a remarkable seventh consecutive podium finish at the world championship – taking place June 20-28, 2014 in Toronto.

Spectators will have the opportunity to experience all of the skill and athleticism that make wheelchair basketball the most popular sport for athletes with a disability in the world.

BCWBS has a rich history of hosting successful events at the Richmond Olympic Oval, most recently including the 2012 National Wheelchair Basketball Championship and 2012 CWBL Women’s Championship. BCWBS also hosted the 2013 Junior West Regional Championship in Prince George. The tournament served as a warm-up tournament for the 2015 Canada Winter Games, which is the largest multi-sport competition for youth in North America.

The BC Breakers women’s team will be looking for their third gold medal in five years. They last won the CWBL Women’s National Championship in front of a hometown crowd when the tournament was last hosted at the Richmond Olympic Oval in 2012.
