Junior East Regional Championship April 19-21, 2013 Coming to Charlottetown, PEI

(Charlottetown, PEI) Canada is a world leader in wheelchair basketball, reaching the top of the podium at the previous six Paralympic Games including wining gold at the London 2012 Summer Paralympics.

Now Charlottetown can catch a glimpse of the next generation of up and coming wheelchair basketball athletes, and 2015 Canada Games hopefuls, who will compete in the 2013 Junior East Regional Championship taking place April 19-21, 2013 at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, at the University of PEI.

The 3-on-3 tournament features the top junior aged athletes (born on January 1, 1991 or later) in Eastern Canada from the provinces of New Brunswick, Ontario, PEI, and Quebec, who are age-eligible to participate in the 2015 Canada Winter Games including local brothers Jeremy and Joel Watts (Charlottetown, PEI), who recently helped Canada qualify for the upcoming World Championships as members of the Junior Men’s National Team.

PEI Mustangs Coaches, Adam Loo and John “Clary” Stubbert (a former Paralympian and member of the Wheelchair Basketball Canada Hall of Fame) will coach the two Prince Edward Island teams.

What: 2013 Junior East Wheelchair Basketball Championships

  • Top junior aged wheelchair basketball players in Easter Canada
  • Local athletes Jeremy and Joel Watts recently won gold with the Canadian Junior Men’s team at the U23 Men’s World Championships Qualifier in Mexico City will represent PEI.
  • Wheelchair Basketball Canada True Sport Award recipient Samuel Graham will represent Ontario.

When: April 19-21, 2013

  • Starting Saturday April 20 at 8:45 a.m. EST
  • Medal ceremony to follow final games Sunday April 21 at 12 p.m. EST

Where: Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, UPEI.

The tournament is co-hosted by Wheelchair Basketball Canada and Parasport and Recreation PEI.
