Wheelchair Basketball Canada Congratulates Bill Johnson on Coaching Excellence Award

(Ottawa, Ont.) Wheelchair Basketball Canada congratulates Bill Johnson, head coach of the Canadian Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball Team, who was honoured Friday with a Coaching Excellence Award for 2014 from the Coaching Association of Canada. The Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards were awarded at the Petro-Canada Sport Leadership Awards Gala, which took place in Ottawa on Friday, November 7, 2014.

These prestigious awards recognize coaches whose athletes have excelled at world championships, Olympic and Paralympic Games, and at the Special Olympics World Games.

Earlier this year Johnson led Team Canada to gold on home soil at the 2014 Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Toronto, Ont. Canada defeated the number one ranked team in the world to win their fifth world championship title, and first in eight years.

“Bill and the Canadian Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team seized the day and moved Canadians to the edge of their seats in June when they captured world championship gold in a truly dramatic fashion. Congratulations to Bill on the leadership and excellence you displayed in guiding our athletes to the top of the podium,” said Wheelchair Basketball Canada Executive Director Wendy Gittens.

A native of Winnipeg, Man., Johnson took over head coaching duties for the Canadian women’s team in 2009. He also led the team to a bronze medal at the world championship in 2010.
