Biography:

Helaina Cyr began playing wheelchair basketball at 8 years old on a mini-basketball team in her hometown of Edmonton. She soon met Paralympian and former Sr. Women’s National Team player Danielle Peers, who invited Cyr to practice with the Edmonton Inferno club. Cyr has been playing the hard-hitting sport ever since.

Under the guidance of Peers and fellow wheelchair basketball Paralympian Karla Tritten, Cyr developed the fundamentals of the game and began to forge her own path toward the Canadian National Team.

Cyr values the inclusive nature of wheelchair basketball. She thrives in the rigorous competition of the sport and enjoys the opportunities to compete against other elite athletes. Her excitement and energetic play on the court is an effective weapon on any team.

She has represented Alberta at several national competitions, including the 2011 Canada Games. She also earned a gold medal at the 2013 CWBL Women’s National Championship with her Edmonton Inferno teammates.

Cyr made her national team debut in 2011 with Canada’s first-ever Women’s U25 squad and represented Canada at the inaugural Women’s U25 World Championships in July 2011. While she continues to push the limits within her young athletic career, she hopes to be a part of the rich history of wheelchair basketball in Canada for many years to come.

Off the basketball court, Cyr enjoys being a regular teenager. She keeps busy with school, where her favourite subject is language arts, and likes watching movies and spending time with friends.
