(Incheon, South Korea) Maureen Orchard, President of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF), was present in Korea Friday March 21 to oversee the draw for the groups for the 2014 Men’s World Championship.

She was joined at the draw by Ulf Mehrens, Vice President IWBF, who accompanied her as she visited Songlim Gymnasium, the site of the second venue that will be used for the Championship.

« We were both very impressed with the brand new venue. It is fully accessible with seating for 7,000 and is only a short distance from the hotels the teams will stay in. The Samsan Gymnasium will serve as the main venue which will host half of the first round games and all of the playoff games and is also very accessible. »

The draw took place in front of dignitaries and members of the Organizing Committee as well as members of KWBF and some of the Korean Team.

Orchard explained the draw process to the audience, she reminded everyone that one of the main purposes to the draw was to try as much as possible to distribute the top teams across the four groups and try to ensure a balance in the teams geographically.

Korea Wheelchair Basketball President Jansgil Kim welcomed everyone to the draw and mentioned how pleased they were to be hosting the first 16-team world championship for men.

Orchard then took the stage to conduct the draw assisted by guests of the Organizing Committee.

She explained that first they would draw a ball from the bowl in front her to determine which group the team would be in. This would be followed by a second person drawing from the bowl containing the numbers 1-4 which would determine the rank of the team in the group.

After the three first teams in each group were set it was time for Korea to chose the group they wanted to be placed in.

Korea chose Group A and the draw was completed. The groups are:

Group A
1. Great Britain
2. Mexico
3. Korea
4. Argentina

Group B

4. Japan

Group C
1. Turkey
2. Algeria
3. Colombia
4. Unites States

Group D

Orchard explained that the top three teams from Groups A & B will move on to Group E and the top three teams in Group C and D will go into Group F.

The teams will play for the right to move on to the quarter-finals. The bottom teams in in first four groups will go into the consolation round.
