Americas Cup Day Four Recap: Team Canada Goes 3-1 in Round Robin

It was a noisy, pro-Colombia crowd at the Americas Cup August 7, but Canada came out on top with a six-point victory over the host team.

The game started as a see-saw battle, but Canada took the lead at 8-6 and never let it go. The score was 15-10 after the first quarter and Canada continued to hold a five-point lead at half, 25-20.

The lead was stretched to 32-26 after the third quarter and Canada remained 10 points up with only two minutes left to play. Colombia fought back though, hitting three consecutive three-pointers to bring the game to 44-43 with just under a minute to play.

Nik Goncin, who finished with nine points for the night, scored a tough basket to give Canada a 46-43 lead. Colombia missed on their next attempt and fouled David Eng. He converted one free throw and the tough Canadian defence forced a Colombian turnover.

With only 12 seconds left, Dave Durepos came off the bench as one of the team’s best free throw shooters, anticipating a quick foul from Colombia.  When they chose not to foul, he converted a field goal attempt to close the game out at 49-43.

Eng and Bo Hedges both had 12 points for the night and Adam Lancia finished the game with 16 rebounds.

The men will play their quarterfinal match August 9 against a team still to be determined. A victory will secure them a spot in the 2014 World Championship, set for July 1-12, 2014 in Incheon, South Korea.
