Canadian Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Team Roster Change for the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games

(Ottawa, Ont.) Wheelchair Basketball Canada and the Canadian Paralympic Committee congratulate Danielle DuPlessis who has been named to the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Team for the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games from August 23-September 1, 2019. DuPlessis is replacing Melanie Hawtin, who is unable to compete due to injury.

DuPlessis (Fredericton, N.B.) got started in wheelchair basketball in 2017 following a number of knee injuries. She was first introduced to the sport years earlier when Dave Durepos, a Paralympic gold medalist in wheelchair basketball, came for a presentation in her elementary school. She has quickly risen to the national team level.

“The opportunity to represent Canada means so much to me because I am proud to have come back from my injuries to compete at the highest level,” DuPlessis said. “I am super excited to wear the maple leaf while playing a sport that I love with all my teammates.”

The Lima 2019 Parapan American Games will surpass Toronto 2015 as the largest Parapan Am Games ever with a record 1,850 athletes set to participate. Canada is sending a team of 151 athletes in 13 sports.

The Parapan American Games act as the wheelchair basketball Americas Zone qualification tournament for the Paralympic Games. The Canadian women will aim for a top 2 finish in order to punch their ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, while the men must finish top 3.

In both men’s and women’s action in Lima, Canada will compete in Group A for the preliminary round alongside Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia. The top four finishers in the women’s event will move onto the semifinals, while the men’s tournament will see all eight nations re-seeded for the quarter-finals.

Canada’s schedule is as follows:

  • August 24: Canada vs. Colombia WOMEN
  • August 25: Canada vs. Colombia MEN
