Wheelchair basketball is a fast-paced, exhilarating, competitive sport and one of the premiere draws at the Paralympic Games. The sport’s roots trace back to the 1940’s, when World War II veterans adapted it from standup basketball. Part V of Wheelchair Basketball Canada’s “London Calling” video series explores the evolution of the sport through the eyes of the Canadian Men’s National Team.

London Calling – Part V: The Evolution of Wheelchair Basketball

“London Calling” is an eight-part video series that takes an in-depth look at Team Canada, re-visits the winning history of Canadian wheelchair basketball at the Paralympic Games, profiles the evolution of the sport, and previews the highly-anticipated, hard-hitting competition set to unfold in London this summer.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada will unveil the remaining videos in the series over the coming months as the countdown continues toward the Paralympic Games, which take place August 29th to September 9th, 2012.

About Team Canada

The Senior Men’s National Team is amongst the top wheelchair basketball teams in the world. The Canadian Men are the defending silver medallists from the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. They won back-to-back Paralympic gold medals in 2000 and 2004 and have reached the podium at five of the last six consecutive World Championships.

The Senior Women’s National Team is amongst the most successful and dominant teams in Canadian amateur sport history. The team captured three consecutive Paralympic gold medals in 1992, 1996, and 2000, and bronze in 2004. They have also reached the podium at six consecutive World Championships.
