Biography

Janet McLachlan has always been a talent on the basketball court. She played basketball for the University of Victoria Vikes for five seasons, winning two national championships in 1998 and 2000. She also represented Canada at the 2001 Beijing Student Games.

A versatile athlete, McLachlan also played rugby at an elite level and attended tryouts for the Canadian national team. Her rugby career was cut short after sustaining a knee injury while competing for the British Columbia provincial team, which prevented her from making Canada’s national squad for the 2006 World Cup. A rugby teammate suggested she try wheelchair sports to stay in shape while recovering from her injury, which led McLachlan to discover wheelchair basketball.

McLachlan began competing in wheelchair basketball in 2006 and was thrilled to be able continue playing the sport she loves in a new and challenging way. She made the national team in 2008 and competed for Team Canada at the Paralympic Games that same year. She has since developed into one of the best female wheelchair basketball players in the world and is a dominant point producer and rebounder.

In 2014, McLachlan and her Canadian teammates became world champions on home soil after capturing the gold medal at the women’s world championship in Toronto, Ont. She also won a bronze medal with Team Canada at the world championship in 2010.

McLachlan has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Victoria and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta. She attended the University of Alabama where she began a degree in interior design and discovered a love for the structural, spatial aspects of the discipline. In particular, she really enjoys residential design and looking at such things as accessibility and longevity. The University of Alabama offered her a chance to train in wheelchair basketball during the winter and she helped the Crimson Tide win back-to-back national championships in 2009 and 2010.

After completing her career at the University of Alabama, McLachlan joined the Trier Dolphins, a semi-professional wheelchair basketball team in Germany.
