Team Canada locks in second seed in Group A with win over Spain

SWNT wrapped up pool play with a commanding 81-49 victory on Sunday

PARIS – Kady Dandeneau scored a triple-double, and Arinn Young added 23 points as Team Canada concluded group play at the Paralympics with a dominating 81-49 win over Spain at Bercy Arena on Sunday.

“It was electrifying out there, and I think it was a team win tonight,” said Elodie Tessier, who chipped in four points.  “Everyone contributed, the bench was loud, and the fans were loud, and it’s just amazing to win this one.”

Canada now awaits its opponent for Wednesday’s quarterfinals matchup.

Dandeneau had a game-high 36 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists in the win, while Cindy Ouellet added 14 points, three rebounds and two assists.

“I’m super proud of the group. I think we knew that coming in, we would have to execute three solid game plans,” said head coach Michele Sung. “This tournament is super competitive. I really applaud the athletes—they did a great job tonight, for sure.”

Canada’s defence held Spain to 40 per cent shooting while finishing 31 of 55 from the field on the offensive side of the ball.

Spain and Canada split a pair of meetings at the IWBF World Championships last year, so the team was well-prepared for a challenge from their opponent on Sunday.

“They’re a very crafty team; it’s one of the things I admire a lot about them,” Dandeneau said. “They’re physical, and I love that, but tonight we were like, ‘not again.’ Just keeping our heads and then just playing our game.”

The Senior Women’s National Team pushed its lead to 23 through three quarters and led 59-36 heading into the fourth quarter.

Canada out-scored Spain 20-12 in the second quarter and led 41-26 at the break.

Young had eight second-quarter points to go along with three assists and two rebounds, and Dandeneau led all first half scorers with 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

Team Canada shot 64 per cent from the field through two quarters and held Spain to 12 of 25 shooting at halftime.

The SWNT lead 21-14 after one period.

Canada went on a 6-0 run to jump out to an early 10-4 lead and then scored nine unanswered to push the lead to 19-8 with two minutes to play in the period.

Dandeneau paced Canada with 15 points, five rebounds and one assist, and Ouellet added four points in the first quarter.
