Ontario and Quebec strike Gold at 2025 National Championships

Ontario won bronze in the women’s division while Quebec took third in the men’s division

(OSHAWA, ONT) – – Quebec captured gold in the women’s division, while Ontario claimed top honours in the men’s division at the 2025 National Championships on Sunday in Oshawa.

Cindy Ouellet led the way for Quebec with 19 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds. Élodie Tessier chipped in with 10 points, six assists, and five rebounds, while Charlie Parent added nine points and two rebounds in the win.

“It feels good. It’s always a pleasure to play with Team Quebec. I’m very honoured to be coached by Jason Eng,” Tessier said. “We are very strong. I think we have a really good foundation in Quebec. We have good coaches and we are building the foundation. It’s pretty nice. Everybody is developing well, and it’s really great for our province.”

Ontario held off a late push from Alberta to secure a 63-60 victory in the men’s division gold medal game.

Ibrahim Odza led the way with a game-high 22 points, along with 10 rebounds and seven assists. Lee Melymick contributed 13 points and three assists, while Nasif Chowdhury added 10 points and five rebounds in the win.

“It’s so nice that we were able to put it together. We practiced so hard for this moment, and it’s nice that it’s finally paid off,” said Jesse McNalley, who contributed 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. “Alberta is such a good team, but really happy that we were able to hold on.”

Celine Freeman-Gibb had a game-high 14 points and six rebounds as Ontario defeated the Mixed Team 40-18 to capture bronze in the women’s division.

Tamara Steeves added six points, five rebounds and an assist while Tayler O’Shaughnessy chipped in six points, three rebounds and two assists in the victory.

In the men’s bronze medal game, Lionel Tamoki paced Quebec with 22 points, five rebounds and two assists in an 84-49 victory over Saskatchewan.

Ben Palmer added 17 points, 10 rebounds and two assists, and Jonathan Vermette contributed 14 points, seven assists and three rebounds.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada announced during the afternoon’s medal ceremony that BC Wheelchair Basketball Society will host the 2026 National Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval from May 15–17, as part of the inaugural OneAbility Games. The OneAbility Games includes showcase events featuring competitive athletes in the ACHIEVE Stream, along with school-age youth learning to compete in the PLAY Stream.

Canada’s top wheelchair basketball athletes participated in a best-on-best competition at the 2025 National Championships in Durham Region.

Presented by ONPARA and Sport Durham, the event featured men’s and women’s divisions, showcasing the speed, skill and determination that define one of the world’s most popular and competitive adaptive sports.
