Wheelchair Basketball Canada welcomes playground to podium funding from Government of Canada

(OTTAWA, Ont.) — Wheelchair Basketball Canada (WBC) welcomes the Government of Canada’s announcement confirming a $755 million investment over five years to support the continued growth and success of sport across the country.

The announcement ensures that Canadians of all ages and abilities can engage in sport while enabling the country’s top athletes to thrive. It will also help position Canada to host major international events, including competitions such as the Ottawa 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships.

“We are encouraged by this significant investment, which recognizes the vital role sport plays in communities across Canada,” said WBC CEO Wendy Gittens. “This funding will help ensure more Canadians have access to sport, while also supporting our athletes as they pursue excellence on the world stage.”

The investment includes $118 million in ongoing support for National Sport Organizations and athletes, helping to strengthen development pathways and enhance the resources available to those competing at the highest levels. This funding is expected to drive increased grassroots participation, improve athlete support systems, and contribute to sustained international success.

Outlined in the government’s Spring Economic Update, the funding reinforces a commitment to strengthening Canada’s sport system at all levels—from grassroots participation to high-performance excellence.

WBC thanks Prime Minister Mark Carney and Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden for their leadership and commitment to advancing Canadian sport.
