Canada’s top wheelchair basketball athletes set to compete at 2026 National Championships May 15-17 in Richmond

Part of the inaugural OneAbility Games, the three-day tournament will showcase best-on-best competition

(OTTAWA, Ont.) — Canada’s premier wheelchair basketball event returns May 15-17 as the nation’s top athletes gather for the 2026 National Championships, bringing best-on-best competition to the Richmond Olympic Oval.

Integrated into the inaugural OneAbility Games, the 2026 National Championships will help anchor a first-of-its-kind celebration of inclusive sport and athletic excellence on the West Coast.

“We are thrilled to have Wheelchair Basketball Canada’s National Championships as one of the ACHIEVE sports in the inaugural OneAbility Games. This event is a showcase of the exceptional talent of players in Canada, and an opportunity to introduce the next generation of athletes to this great sport,” said Andrea Carey, Director of Games.

The round robin portion of the tournament tips off on Friday, May 15, at 8:30 am PDT, and the medal round games tip off on Sunday, May 17, at 8:00 am PDT.

Fans can look forward to several marquee matchups throughout the weekend, including a featured women’s division game on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. PDT, when host British Columbia faces Ontario at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The three-day tournament will feature elite men’s and women’s divisions, showcasing the highest level of wheelchair basketball in Canada while celebrating the depth, growth, and competitive spirit of the sport from coast to coast.

“The National Championships are the pinnacle of domestic competition in Canada,” said WBC CEO Wendy Gittens. “This event brings together our top athletes in a true best-on-best environment and highlights the strength of our high-performance pathway.”

The 2026 Championships will spotlight the continued rise of the women’s game, including a women’s Rest of Canada team comprised of athletes representing Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland—an example of the sport’s growing reach nationwide.

“The level of talent and representation we’re seeing in the women’s division is incredibly exciting,” said Sean Liebich, WBC’s Director of Programming. “It speaks to the momentum we’re building across the country and the opportunities being created for athletes at every level.”

In addition to on-court action, the Championships will mark the debut of Wheelchair Basketball Canada’s new schedule and results microsite, developed in partnership with RAMP Interactive.

The platform will provide real-time scoring, schedules, and standings, enhancing the experience for athletes, coaches, and fans alike.

The 2026 National Championships will play a key role in strengthening competitive pathways and elevating the sport’s profile nationwide, reinforcing Wheelchair Basketball Canada’s commitment to growth and long-term development.
