The event, held in Ottawa, brings the total raised at Hoopfest events to nearly $70,000

The Holiday Hoopfest presented by Toyota Canada took place on Friday, with the University of Ottawa winning the thrilling 3-on-3 tournament at the Rideau Sports Centre in Ottawa.

The fifth edition of Wheelchair Basketball Canada’s signature fundraising event generated more than $20,000, bringing the total amount raised at Hoopfest to nearly $70,000 in support of grassroots wheelchair basketball programs across Canada.

“On behalf of Wheelchair Basketball Canada, we extend our many thanks to all of the 2022 Holiday Hoopfest participants and our partners, including our presenting sponsor Toyota for their tremendous support,” said Wheelchair Basketball Canada Executive Director Wendy Gittens. “The funds raised will go a long way in helping us reach our goals of providing world-class training opportunities and supporting grassroots programs.”

The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees defeated the Westin/Delta Ottawa team 7-5 in a thrilling final game, while Byers Ballers took bronze with a victory over True Sport.

Nine teams participated in Hoopfest this year, including entries from the Canada Games Council, Ottawa Tourism, First Lake Solutions and Tony Graham Toyota. The University of Ottawa and Westin/Delta Ottawa also participated in the tournament.

Hoopfest is a half-day challenge that builds team spirit as corporate, and community teams enjoy the thrill of competing in a fun and completely inclusive 3-on-3 wheelchair basketball tournament. Participants also have the opportunity to interact with Team Canada athletes and coaches. The event’s goal is to raise funds that enable more Canadians to experience the life-changing impact of wheelchair basketball while bringing awareness to the sport and the athletes.
