The three-day tournament will serve as a test event for the 2027 Canada Winter Games
(OTTAWA, Ont.) – Wheelchair Basketball Canada (WBC) is pleased to announce that the 2026 Junior National Championship will take place from June 5–7, 2026, at the CEGEP Limoilou Sports Complex in Quebec City, Que.
The event will bring together the country’s top junior athletes and teams for one of the premier development competitions on the national calendar. The 2026 championship will serve as both a test event and a seeding tournament ahead of the 2027 Canada Winter Games, providing an important opportunity for athletes to compete at a high level as preparations continue toward next year’s Games.
“We’re excited to bring the Junior National Championship to Quebec City and provide athletes with an important competitive opportunity as we continue building toward the 2027 Canada Winter Games,” said Sean Liebich, WBC Director of Development. “This event plays a critical role in athlete development, talent identification, and preparing our junior athletes for future success on the national and international stage.”
The three-day tournament will feature eight teams across two pools, including defending champions Team BC, who return just two athletes from their gold medal-winning roster at the 2023 Canada Winter Games: reigning Junior Athlete of the Year Elise Froese and Jeffer Ward.
The event also marks Year 3 of the current junior quadrennial program cycle, representing a key milestone in the continued development of Canada’s next generation of wheelchair basketball talent.
Round-robin play tips off on Friday, June 5, with Ontario taking on Quebec at 8 a.m. EDT. The opening day schedule also includes the Feature Game between Quebec and Alberta at 1:30 p.m. EDT, followed by the tournament concluding on Sunday with the medal-round games.
In addition to competition, the event will feature a rules clinic open to all participants and hosted by internationally carded official Sébastien Gauthier. The clinic will provide athletes, coaches, and officials with valuable education and insight into the latest rules and officiating standards.
