Calgary 1, New Brunswick, Club 99 undefeated on Day 1 at CWBL Nationals presented by SureGrip

The host, Team NB, was 3-0 on Friday

Team Calgary 1, Club 99, and the host, New Brunswick, are undefeated following the first day of action at the 2024 CWBL National Championship presented by SureGrip at the Richard J. Currie Center.

Calgary 1 opened Friday with a 75-31 victory over Team BC in Division 1 play. Nik Goncin paced Calgary with a game-high 28 points. Jared Sajtos added 15, and Chad Jassman finished with 14 in the victory.

Goncin scored a triple-double as the Rollers concluded their Day 1 action with a 79-57 win over Centre d’integration a la vie active (CIVA). Goncin had a game-high 32 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists in the win. Sajtos added 24 points and 14 rebounds.

In Division 2 action, the host New Brunswick opened with a convincing 73-24 victory over Nova Scotia. Austin MacLellan paced Team NB with 19 points, while Desiree Isaac-Pictou chipped in 14 points in the victory.

New Brunswick followed it up with a 64-42 win over the Edmonton Inferno. Shane Dunnett led the way with 16 points, five rebounds and two assists. Westley Johnston added 10 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists in the win. Edmonton was paced by Ben Tumack, who scored a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.

Dunnett, Johnston and Isaac-Pictou scored in double figures as Team NB concluded their action Friday with a 62-42 win over Calgary 2. Dunnett and Johnston each had 14 points in the win, while Isaac-Pictou chipped in 10 points.

Club 99 out of Saskatchewan opened their day with a 57-51 win over Calgary 2. Lanette Boland paced all scorers with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Bortis added 23 points and nine rebounds. Jeffer Ward was the top scorer for Calgary 2 with 14 points and three assists.

Bortis had a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds as Club 99 improved to 2-0 with a 50-48 win over the Inferno. Boland added 14 points and six rebounds in the win. Hayes Cooke had a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Inferno.

Club 99 concluded Day 1’s action with a 56-23 win over Nova Scotia. Bortis had a game-high 20 points, 16 rebounds and six assists. Boland added 14.

The action continues Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. ADT, when the Inferno and Calgary 2 tip off the Day 2 schedule. Gym 1 games can be streamed on the WBC YouTube channel.

Parasport New Brunswick is hosting the 2024 CWBL National Championship presented by SureGrip at the Richard J. Currie Center in Fredericton, N.B.

The National Championship takes place every spring when competitive club teams from across Canada compete for the title of national champion. The CWBL National Championship is the premiere national event on the annual domestic wheelchair basketball calendar. It also hosts the Wheelchair Basketball Canada annual awards banquet.
