Calgary Rollers top Gladiateurs de Laval to win CWBL National Championship

New Brunswick defeated the Edmonton Inferno to take Division 2 gold

Nik Goncin had a triple-double, leading the Calgary Rollers to a 70-57 victory over the Gladiateurs de Laval in the Division 1 gold medal game at the 2024 CWBL National Championship presented by SureGrip on Sunday.

Goncin had a game-high 33 points, 14 rebounds, and 14 assists in the win for the Rollers, who went a perfect 5-0 over the three-day tournament in Fredericton. Chad Jassman added 16 points, four rebounds and three assists, and Jared Sajtos scored 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Calgary also defeated the Gladiateurs 71-54 on Saturday.

On Sunday, the GLADS were paced by Cindy Ouellet’s 18 points and three rebounds. Marc Antoine Ducharme had 17 points and six rebounds while Carl Pelletier added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Goncin, the Division 1 MVP, finished the three-day tournament with three triple-doubles in five games.

The Regina, Sask. native scored 28 in Calgary’s 75-31 tournament-opening win over BC and followed it up with a triple-double – 32 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists – in the 79-57 win over Centre d’integration a la vie active on Friday.

On Saturday, Goncin had 31 points and 12 rebounds in the win over the GLADS and added a triple-double – 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists – in the 57-35 victory over BC.

In the Division 1 third-place game, Centre d’integration a la vie active edged the BC Grizzlies 58-54.

Sean Wilson, Austin MacLellan and Shane Dunnett scored in double digits as the host New Brunswick took Division 2 gold, defeating the Edmonton Inferno 62-44.

Wilson had a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. MacLellan added 17 points and seven assists, while Dunnett chipped in 10 points and six rebounds in the win. Ben Tumack paced Edmonton with 15 points, six rebounds and six assists. Sydney Poapst had 11 points and five rebounds, and Ceilidh Nordell and Hayes Cooke contributed six points each.

In the Division 2 bronze medal game, the Calgary Rollers edged Club99 57-56.

Parasport New Brunswick hosted the 2024 CWBL National Championship presented by SureGrip at the Richard J. Currie Center in Fredericton, N.B.

The National Championship takes place every spring when competitive club teams from across Canada compete for the title of national champion. The CWBL National Championship is the premiere national event on the annual domestic wheelchair basketball calendar. It also hosts the Wheelchair Basketball Canada annual awards banquet.
