Canada falls to Germany to conclude group play at U25 Worlds

Canada will now play in the quarterfinals in Bangkok

Team Canada fell 47-30 to Germany to conclude play in Group B at the 2023 IWBF Women’s U25 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship.

“We learned a lot from that game. We did a good job of executing our game plan. We did what we wanted to do, but we had trouble again with our shooting percentage,” said Women’s U25 Head Coach Marni Abbott-Peter. “We had opportunities. The thing is that we stuck together as a team. We knew Germany would be a tough game, but we stuck together and kept at it.”

Canada (2-2) finished second in Group B and will face China (2-2) on Saturday morning (1:45 a.m. ET) in the quarterfinals in Bangkok.

“We’re excited with what we’ve done so far. We’ve got lots of energy, everybody is still healthy, the athletes are doing a great job of taking care of themselves and controlling all of the distractions,” added Abbott-Peter. “We’re thinking positively going into the quarterfinals.”

Elise Froese (Victoria, B.C.) paced Canada with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Puisand Lai (Toronto, Ontario) added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Bethany Johnson (Winnipeg, Man.) chipped in seven points and 11 rebounds at the Bangkok Youth Center.

Canada opened the second half on a 6-0 run, cutting Germany’s lead to 10, but Germany closed the period on a 10-4 surge and led by 16 heading to the fourth. Frose had 10 points and 12 rebounds through three quarters.

Canada out-scored Germany 11-8 and cut Germany’s lead to 30-14 through two quarters. Lai led the way with six points and three rebounds. Johnson added five points and three rebounds.

Germany opened the first quarter on a 15-0 run and led 22-3 after one.
