The Senior Women’s National Team defeated Spain 77-49 on Thursday
Kady Dandeneau scored a double-double, leading Canada to a 77-49 win over Spain on Day 2 of competition at the Women’s IWBF Repechage Tournament in Osaka, Japan.
Dandeneau (Pender Island, B.C.) had a game-high 35 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Arinn Young (Legal, Alta.) added 20 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Cindy Ouellet (Quebec City, Que.) chipped in eight points and three assists, and Rosalie Lalonde (Saint-Clet, Que.) contributed eight points and two assists.
“It was a pretty good team win. We knew that Spain likes to come out and be a very energetic team, so we came out pretty centred knowing that they would try to get us off our game that way,” Dandeneau said. “I think we took care of things, stayed composed, played a perfect team game and executed many of the things we set out to do.”
The Senior Women’s National Team shot 28 of 60 from the field and took advantage of Spain’s foul troubles, going 16 of 27 from the line in the victory. Canada scored 15 points off Spain’s turnovers and limited Spain to 37 per cent from the field.
“We were able to execute and get some of their bigger threats into foul trouble, and we were able to capitalize on it and use it to our advantage,” Dandeneau added.
Team Canada opened an 18-point lead, outscoring Spain 22-12 in the third quarter. Dandeneau scored 12 points in the period.
Canada outscored Spain 14-8 in the second quarter and led 31-23 at halftime. Dandeneau paced the SWNT with 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Young had six points, six rebounds, and two assists through 20 minutes, while Lalonde had six points at the break.
Team Canada shot 34 from the field and went 8 of 16 from the free-throw line in the first half. Canada scored 10 points off Spain’s turnovers and limited Spain to 37 per cent shooting through two quarters.
The SWNT held a two point advantage, 17-15 after one quarter. Dandeneau led the way with eight points and three assists. Lalonde added four off the bench, while Young chipped in three points.
The repechage tournament is a final opportunity for teams who did not qualify for the Paris Games through their zone qualifier to earn a spot at the Paralympic Games.
The tournament consists of two groups that will establish rankings for crossover matches. The knockout stage will unveil the four teams that earn a berth in the 2024 Paralympic Games.
