Wheelchair Basketball Canada’s Hoopfest, presented by Toyota Canada, took place on Thursday, with Sunrise Medical winning the 3-on-3 tournament at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

The sixth edition of WBC’s signature fundraising event generated over $25,000, bringing the total amount raised at Hoopfest to over $90,000 in support of grassroots wheelchair basketball programs across Canada.

“Wheelchair Basketball Canada would like to thank the 14 teams that participated in the 2023 Hoopfest in Toronto,” said Wheelchair Basketball Canada Executive Director Wendy Gittens. “I’d also like to acknowledge our partners, including presenting sponsor Toyota Canada, for their tremendous support. The funds raised at Hoopfest go a long way in helping us reach our goal of providing world-class training opportunities and supporting grassroots programs.”

Sunrise Medical defeated Durham Medical Team 2 4-0 in the gold medal game, while Toyota Canada took bronze with a 10-8 victory over Tjene.

Fourteen teams participated in Hoopfest in Toronto, including entries from Toyota Canada, GoodLife, Sunrise Medical and Tjene. Meridian, Abilities Member Group, Durham Medical, the Canadian Paralympic Committee, Hydro One, HME Mobility, and IFG Workplace also participated in the tournament.

Hoopfest is a half-day challenge that builds team spirit as corporate and community teams enjoy the thrill of competing in a fun and completely inclusive 3-on-3 wheelchair basketball tournament. Participants also have the opportunity to interact with Team Canada athletes and coaches. The event aims to raise funds that enable more Canadians to experience the life-changing impact of wheelchair basketball while bringing awareness to the sport and the athletes.
