Team Canada Places Sixth at 2013 Americas Cup

(Bogota, Colombia) The Canadian Senior Men’s National Wheelchair Basketball Team placed sixth at the 2013 Americas Cup following a 70-65 overtime loss to Brazil on Saturday in Bogota, Colombia.

A slow start once again put Canada in an early hole but the team showed composure and went on a 9-0 run to open the second quarter to take the lead 19-17. Brazil responded with a run of its own to take a 28-21 lead into halftime.

Canada closed the gap to within a single basket, 41-39, after the third quarter. Brazil matched Canada basket for basket in the final frame, until some tough defence and clutch shooting allowed Canada tied the game at 58 to force overtime.

Brazil came out shooting in extra time and the Canadians could not keep pace as they were outscored 12-7 to end the game.

Canada struggled from the free throw line, shooting just 45 per cent (14 for 31), and allowed Brazil to convert second-chance scoring opportunities off offensive rebounds.

David Eng produced a team-high 31 points for the Canadian side while Bo Hedges and Dave Durepos also added 16 and 10 points, respectively in the losing effort.
