Wheelchair Basketball’s NextGen Program is an integral part of our Senior National Teams and serves as an entry point for athletes who aspire to play for Team Canada. The NextGen program aims to create a sustainable podium pathway for Wheelchair Basketball Canada by identifying and developing world-class athletes who contribute to the performance of the Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s National Teams on the international stage.
NextGen Athletes
Athletes in the NextGen program have been identified as trending towards competing for a roster spot on the Senior National Team for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games. They are 2-4 years away from significant National Team contribution.
NextGen athletes will be invited to selected Senior National Team pool camps and NextGen development camps for training opportunities. Athletes in the NextGen pool will be available for international competitions and qualification tournaments.
WBC is committed to providing comprehensive support for athletes transitioning between the Senior National Teams, Men’s Under-23, and Women’s Under-25 teams. Athletes in the NextGen pool will also have opportunities to compete in the European pro leagues, collegiately in the United States, the NWBA, CWBL Final and WBC Nationals, ensuring a well-rounded and supportive environment for their development.
Emerging NextGen Athletes
This is the intake point for athletes identified for the NextGen program. Athletes in this pool are considered to have potential for the Senior National Team at the 2032 Paralympic Games in Brisbane.
Athletes in this pool are 4-8 years away from significant National Team contribution and will be invited to upcoming NextGen camps for training opportunities.
Emerging NextGen Athletes will train with a club program and commit to the Men’s Under-23 or Women’s Under-25 teams for training camps if selected.
These athletes will compete with a local club team, provincially at Junior East or Junior West and at Junior Nationals and Canada Winter Games.
