Qualification Tournaments

In order to be eligible to compete at major international events such as the Paralympic Games and World Wheelchair Basketball Championships, national teams from across the globe must first earn a berth to those competitions. Teams do so by placing amongst the top teams in their respective qualification tournaments. There are separate qualification tournaments for World Championships and Paralympic Games.

World Championship Qualification Tournaments

Qualification tournaments for the World Championships are governed by the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) and take place in each of the IWBF zones: Africa, Americas, Asia-Oceania and Europe. Canada falls within the IWBF Americas zone. Individual qualifiers are currently held for the senior men’s, senior women’s and junior men’s world championships.

Paralympic Games Qualification Tournaments

Qualification tournaments for the Paralympic Games take place in each of the IWBF zone. The Parapan American Games, as sanctioned by the IWBF, currently act as the wheelchair basketball Americas zone qualification tournament for the Paralympic Games. The Parapan American Games, held in conjunction with the Pan American Games, are a multi-sport event that takes place every four years in the year preceding the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.
