Biography:

Joel Watts first discovered wheelchair basketball in the fifth grade when former national team player Clary Stubbert visited his school for a sport demo. Stubbert invited Joel and his twin brother Jeremy to a local practice and they have been playing wheelchair basketball ever since.

Watts got his start with the mini and development programs in his hometown of Charlottetown, PEI. He eventually joined the PEI Mustangs club team and began competing for the provincial team, representing PEI at national tournaments such as the Canada Games.

Notice from the National Team soon followed. In 2013, Watts earned a roster spot alongside his brother with the Canadian Men’s U23 Wheelchair Basketball Team and helped Canada earn a berth to the World Junior Championship. He calls the opportunity to represent Canada and compete against some of the best wheelchair basketball players in the world ‘a dream come true’.

He attributes the progression of his basketball career to a rigorous training regimen, both on the court and in the weight room. He has also learned from some great coaches along the way, including Stubbert, who Watts looks up to as a role model for his passion for the game.

Outside of basketball, Watts is studying business administration at Holland College in Charlottetown.
