Manitoba won bronze on Monday

(Richmond, B.C.) – For the second consecutive year, the Scarborough Tigers won the CWBL National Championship. On Monday, the Tigers defeated the Gladiateurs de Laval (GLADS) 69-62 at the Richmond Olympic Oval to win gold.

The game was a rematch of the 2022 gold medal game, which Scarborough won 70-57 in Montreal. Before 2022, the GLADS won three consecutive national championships.

Tournament all-star Jesse McNalley scored a game-high 31 points and 13 rebounds. MVP Bo Hedges added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Ben Hagkull scored 14 points in the win.

“It was a cool tournament. It was fun to be here with this group. To win two in a row is pretty special,” said Hedges, a native of Wonowon, B.C. “I’ve been a part of a lot of finals, so it’s nice to get another win. It’s a great group. We had a lot of fun.

“The MVP award was a team effort. It’s fun to do it here, back where I played so much previously.”

The GLADS were paced by 25 points from Cindy Ouellet, and Carl Pelletier added 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Manitoba defeated Centre d’Integration a la vie active (CIVA) 75-50 to take third in the bronze medal game. Reed De’Aeth had a game-high 29 points and 13 rebounds for Manitoba, while Josh Brown added 18 points and eight rebounds, and Emmanuel Fuentes chipped in 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

In Division 2, the BC Orcas topped the Edmonton Inferno 51-47. Ceilidh Nordell and Kim Boland were named Spirit of Sport award recipients.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada and BC Wheelchair Basketball Society co-hosted the three-day tournament. The CWBL National Championship featured the top club teams in the country competing for the title of national champions at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
